Mobile World Technology Congress 2018 (MWC 2018) saw a smart phone that could "smell" obnoxious odors! The applicability of this functionality is limitless. Phones have been keeping us safe and saving our lives for many years now by dialing the emergency 911 with a mere touch of a button or some code button-combinations (which comes in handy when in threatening scenarios).
But if our phones start smelling and detecting odors around us, then they could be programmed to detect if seemingly ordinary smells are containing dangerious levels of toxic chemicals. Hopefully in the near future, a warning from our smart phone could be protect us from toxic concentrations of household VOCs (Volatile Organic Chemicals) such as those found in paints, cleaners and so on...
